John R. Hughes, M.D. - Addiction Psychiatry

Dr. Hughes specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse and addictions, including alcohol, drugs, nicotine, tobacco, and caffeine. He is Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology and Family Practice at the University of Vermont in Burlington.

Dr. Hughes is a founding member of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco and a member of the American Psychiatric Association's Council on Addiction Psychiatry. He is Chairman of the Association's Nicotine Dependence Task Force and the Nicotine Dependence Treatment Guidelines.

He has served as primary investigator on many research projects and is a prolific writer and editor. Dr. Hughes has written over 200 scientific publications on drug abuse. Since 1986, he has served as a reviewer for a number of Reports of the Surgeon General.
